X-Men: First Class (2011)

The greatest mutant bromance ever told.

Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) — the future Professor X and Magneto — are best friends dedicated to harnessing their powers and promoting the education of fellow mutants during the turbulent 1960s. The duo works together to stop a powerful adversary that threatens mankind, but their ideological differences drive them apart and turn them into ferocious enemies.

I’m a big follower of the X-Men. I like the first two X-Men films, and the last two, let’s just say are a little out-there. However, this prequel brings back that flair that I’ve wanted within that genre, since that crap with just Wolverine.

Director Matthew Vaughn who did the “wanna-be” superhero film last year, Kick-Ass, does a surprisingly great job of actually bringing that fun, but very detailed to this story. Vaughn does a great job of keeping this story at a quick pace, with all these different sub-plots and story devices going on at once, but it’s still paced very well and not once did I feel like I was lost in the confusion.

There’s also a great feeling to this screenplay because not only is there a little bit of humor here and there, but it’s also great to see the beginning of the friendship between Professor X and Magneto. Professor X is more like Martin Luther King Jr. as he wants peace in a kind way, while Magneto is more like the Malcolm X type, and believes any force necessary. I liked how this story plays out well and their friendship is the real heart of where the story is located. It must have been hard for four screen-writers to be on this, but somehow, it seems to work out so well.

The action is also amazing. Vaughn really knows how to make the crowd go “wow” with his visuals because they keep on getting cooler and cooler as the whole film continues. There are also a couple of epic scenes with missiles, submarines, and even a couple of bangin’ showdowns between the mutants that step into some unpredictable territory that will keep your eyes fully glued to the screen.

My main problem with this film is that I feel like that this film had so many stuff going at once, that I thought what really worked, didn’t get much attention and other things just sort of dragged it down. Also, I felt they tried to do too many philosophical themes here that didn’t quite work out in the final product, because once you think about it, this is an X-Men film and you don’t really need to say much else.

This whole cast is amazing though. James McAvoy brings that cool and laid-back approach to Professor X and works very well; Michael Fassbender is also great as Magneto and makes him seem like the total mean, and vindictive villain that he is, although his Irish accent comes out a couple of times when he’s trying to sound Polish. These two together have great “buddy” chemistry that makes this film stand-out from any other ordinary superhero flick. Kevin Bacon is pretty good as the smarmy bastard Sebastian Shaw; Jennifer Lawrence is also very good and sexy as a young Mystique; and the rest of the cast does a good job too with the likes of Oliver Platt, Rose Byrne, and the all grown-up Nicholas Hoult. Ohh how they get so old! The weakest link in this cast would probably have to be January Jones as Emma Frost, because even though she looks the part, she doesn’t really bring much to this performance and is ultimately forgettable altogether.

Consensus: It may try it’s luck at times, but X-Men: First Class is a well-scripted, stylishly directed superhero flick from Matthew Vaughn that keeps the action running at a fast-pace, and the actors doing great jobs with the material. This Summer movie season just keeps getting better and better.

8.5/10=Matinee!!

  1. Everyone seems to complain about January Jones, but I thought her natural icy demeanor was perfect for this role. Her character is Emmar FROST after all! Good review

  2. There are a lot of people complaining about the “too much” thing. Too much story, subplot, detail, too quickly done. They clearly are not fans of X-Men. Because for fans of X-Men there is no such thing as too much X-Men. As a fan this was the perfect movie, if you’re not a fan, it’s still really great and can kick the ass of many a blockbuster.

    • I’m a fan and this kicked so much ass, and the “too much” thing you speak of, only bothered me a little bit. Other than that it all seemed to work out so well.

  3. The greatest bromance ever told! I loved how Vaughn developed their friendship and ideologies int his one. I agree with you that they stuffed a lot of content into one movie, but still pulled it off! Great review. πŸ™‚

  4. This is a very thorough and informative review you’ve given. I really enjoyed the film also and was really surprised that I did. The previews didn’t really sell me on it, but my son implored me to take him. I was glad he did. I definitely got into the story and the theme of humans versus mutants has always interested me. Plus, I loved the amazing action.

    • The action is awesome and the story gets better as the film goes on, but I have to say that I really did enjoy myself the whole time through. Thanks George!

  5. Yes, a good movie indeed – and Fassbender and McAvoy work perfectly together.

You hit the fun thing right on the nose. There was a lot of fun moments here – which is actually reminiscent of the comic – the banter and asides.

  6. The only scene I really had a problem with was when they were coming up with nicknames. I thought it was way too fast and not thought out enough with where these powerful names, especially X and Magneto, are generated. It’s was just like, “How about… you think, you that” and so on. Still, the film overall was amazingly awesome. I loved Kevin Bacon and thought he did a great job with all the different languages (my name links to a review a friend of mine wrote on our blog: 9.2/10 there).

Enjoyed reading your review, though. Keep it up!

    • Thanks Ronan! That scene kind of bothered me too now that I think about it. Overall, it was a good and fun film that did a great job with it’s source material.

  7. I really dislike superhero movies: they are just too silly and boyish for me πŸ™‚ But I have to say I absolutely loved this one last night! It was soooo funny and I thought Fassbender and McAvoy were great.
Erik: Excuse me, I’m Erik Lehnsherr.
    Professor X: Charles Xavier.
    Wolverine: Go f*** yourself.
    hahahhahhahahh

  8. I definitely got a James Bond vibe from the whole thing. That’s a good thing. I’d be very happy with the next few films being set in this time period. Oh my goodness an Oliver Platt sighting! Too bad he kind of drops out of the picture, but I’m always happy to see him work!

    • The James Bond feel was here, but it was also slick and I can’t wait to see what they can do next. Also, Oliver Platt is just the man, and is awesome in everything he’s in.

  9. first of all, i love the photo you have here–that’s such an awesome movie poster.

i am pretty much in agreement with what you had to say about the movie (as you already know from reading my review). X and Magneto were the ultimate characters here — i could easily watch a movie that had them as the only X-Men. i would have loved to see more from the supporting characters, but i guess we can learn more about them in the next movies. and I heard his irish accent come out a couple times as well, but the man spoke like 4 languages in that film so it didn’t bother me. didn’t you just love the opening? Kevin Bacon was brilliant in it.

    great review!

  10. I must agree with you that January Jones is so forgettable in the movie. Now, I can’t really remember well what exactly she’s been doing in the film. I’m surprised to see Michael Fassbender did so well in portraying Magneto, the tough man who’s also having a gentle side.

Thanks for dropping by my blog. πŸ™‚ Now I have another great blogger to follow.

  11. Dare I say this may be the best X-Men movie, mainly becuse of Fassbender’s Magneto…no offense to Ian McKellan, of course.

i can’t help but wonder what X-men would be like if they were all like this…not that any of the other were bad, mind you. it just seems as if this one took whaty was already there an make it better.

    great review!

  12. As good as it was, I think I love it even more that it didn’t tank. Trailers looked to be improving and I was sold on the plot from day one but the acting and writing was simply top tier entertainment. Paced superbly and firing on all cylinder, I effen loved this.

Kick-Ass for some reason is fun bet feels very flat. This is like a full bodied 18 year scotch. Man, you ain’t kidding, this Summer movie season just keeps getting better and better. Brilliant review here Dan!

  13. Are you able to elaborate at all about your feelings that movie tries to be too philosophical? And that it’s an X-Men film you don’t need to try much else? If you can remember anyway lol.

I thought this was the most crisp storyline ever, maybe even much [tighter] than Inception’s storyline. Or maybe I’m thinking how they executed the script? But I understood everything and there was real style to this movie. Thaty sequence when Erik goes to the bar on the hilltop? Everything about that looked like ti was ripped from the comic pages to me, the setting, his wardrobe, the dialogue? All of it.

If only the X-Men movies could’ve started off this way…. alas, in my opinion anyway lol. The die hard fans wouldn’t of had to miss out on Iceman and Jean that’s for sure.
